Balloon Vent(aka Chute Vent) is a helm tool used to cause the ship to make a rapid descent, in order to outmaneuver or escape enemies, to bring guns into arc as fast as possible, to duck into cover, or to avoid obstacles. Its effect lasts 3 seconds after deactivation and will damage the balloon over time. The damage to balloon is significantly higher than any repair tool can out-repair, making its usage only valuable for a short period of time. The player needs to actively drop ship altitude to make use of the tool's effect.
Due to the deactivation delay it is generally sufficient to activate it and instantly deactivate it, limiting the damage to balloon.
Like all helm tools it is only useful for the player flying the ship and has no effect if equipped by other crew members.
Common Usage
Most weapons have a better down than up arc, making Balloon Vent a tool used for defensive purposes. An exception is the combination with Carronades to not let drop ships out of the Carronades' very limited down arc after destroying the enemy's balloon.
Defensively used it is especially common on ships with already high vertical speed like Mobula and Squid. Offensive usage paired with Carronades is commonly found on Goldfish and Pyramidion.
