Impact Bumpers is a helm tool used to reduce Impact damage caused by rams, bumps and mines. Angular drag is significantly increased, making the tool's usage valuable when Force attacks (such as from the Minotaur) are being used. A ship using Bumpers becomes very hard to turn or shift sideways, making it an ideal tool vs force attacks, nudges, and rams.
However, this is very counter-productive if the player wants to turn the ship. While activated during rams, bumps and mine hits, the ship will not turn as far due to the angular drag, but turning ships back into arc takes longer due to the same mechanic. Care needs to be taken with timing due to the long activation time.
Like all helm tools it is only useful for the player flying the ship and has no effect if equipped by other crew members.
Common Usage
Impact Bumpers is found on all ships intending to take a lot of impact damage. It is a good supplementary tool for rams in combination with Moonshine and Kerosene, which both increase speed, and can help to reduce damage if combined with those tools. In general, it is also used to reduce damage taken by bumping to the ground against balloon destroying opponents without fast release.
Unless the pilot has Drogue Chute, Impact Bumpers is used when already low on the ground if used to fight against balloon destroying ships.
