The Scylla Double-Barreled Mortar is a high fire rate weapon that fires slow, deep arcing explosive projectiles. Its double Explosive damage paired with moderate fire rate and decent clip size makes this gun an extremely powerful close range finisher once the armor is destroyed.
In good hands certain ships won't even have a chance to rebuild their armor before the ship dies - two or sometimes three crew members are needed to get the armor up in time.
Common Tactics
The Scylla Double-Barreled Mortar is highly effective against hull and has, compared to the other high Explosive kill weapons, the Flaks, no arming time. It is used to finish off most ships at close range with one single clip (commonly Greased Rounds for even better DPS) without giving the Engineers a chance to rebuild the armor in time.
Like all kill weapons the Mortar requires an exposed hull to cause damage to it. The only Piercing weapon with similar effective range is the Whirlwind Light Gatling Gun, therefore this is the most commonly paired combination. It is commonly found on the front of Pyramidions and the sides of Junkers, and, less commonly, on the Mobula or Spire. To summarize, it is found everywhere where two light gun slots have overlapping arcs since this is the deadliest short range gun combination. On Mobulas and Spires it is quite common to use a second Gatling Gun for even faster armor destruction.
The Mortar has only a short maximum range and is also, due to its shell drop, quite hard to shoot at long ranges (relative to max range). Additionally, the slow projectile speed makes it possible (but not easy) to dodge the well visible black projectiles - especially with maneuverable ships like Junker, Mobula, Goldfish or a Squid.
Commonly Used Ammunition
Lesmok Rounds
- Increased maximum range to 680 meters, but aiming on this distance is challengeable.
- Aiming is easier due to the reduced drop of the shell and an increase in the velocity of the projectile, helpful when facing with a faster ships or for increase effective distance of fire..
- Overall damage per clip to hull (1008 HP) still high enough to kill most ships.
- Clip size reduced to 8 bullets.
